Borrowdale Gates Hotel was built in 1861 by philanthropist Mrs Margret Heathcote. She ran a school room within the property and even a chapel in one of the upstairs rooms. In the early 1900's it became a small hotel with a dozen rooms. Subsequent owners added extension after extension to the point that it looked rather unattractive.
